* Update year range in copyright notice of binutils filesAlan Modra2023-01-011-3/+5
| | | | | | The newer update-copyright.py fixes file encoding too, removing cr/lf on binutils/bfdtest2.c and ld/testsuite/ld-cygwin/exe-export.exp, and embedded cr in binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp string match.
* ar: Add --thin for creating thin archivesFangrui Song2022-01-111-0/+17
| | | | | | | | | | | | | In many ar implementations (FreeBSD, elfutils, etc), -T has the X/Open System Interface specified semantics. Therefore -T for thin archives is not recommended for portability. -T is deprecated without diagnostics. PR binutils/28759 * ar.c (long_options): Add --thin. (usage) Add --thin. Deprecate -T without diagnostics. * doc/binutils.texi: Add doc. * NEWS: Mention --thin. * binutils/testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp: Add tests.
* Update year range in copyright notice of binutils filesAlan Modra2022-01-021-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | The result of running etc/update-copyright.py --this-year, fixing all the files whose mode is changed by the script, plus a build with --enable-maintainer-mode --enable-cgen-maint=yes, then checking out */po/*.pot which we don't update frequently. The copy of cgen was with commit d1dd5fcc38ead reverted as that commit breaks building of bfp opcodes files.
* binutils testsuite: replace unresolved with unsupportedAlan Modra2021-02-121-11/+11
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | You'd think "unresolved" would be correct for an objcopy test when the assembler refuses to assemble one of our source files. After all, the test of objcopy hasn't been run. However, "unresolved" results in runtest returning with an error status. If instead we report "unsupported", runtest returns success. Which is a little less confusing to a user who doesn't see any errors reported unless they look in log files. * testsuite/binutils-all/objcopy.exp: Report "unsupported" when gas or ld fails to build a testcase rather than "unresolved". Report "fail" when readelf returns an error status rather than "unresolved". * testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp: Likewise. * testsuite/binutils-all/compress.exp: Likewise. * testsuite/binutils-all/readelf.exp: Likewise.

* binutils archive testsAlan Modra2020-06-021-54/+71
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There are a number of targets that don't support thin archives (*), and vms doesn't even support file name extensions other than .obj for archives containing object files. This patch adjusts the testsuite to cater for the vms restriction, and reenables testing for non-ELF alpha targets. That adds a few alpha-dec-vms fails and one alpha-linuxecoff fail but testsuite fails on those targets are nothing new. (*) It might seem like they do if binutils is built with --enable-plugins but the plugin archive support is broken, causing the wrong type of archives to be created by ar for those targets. * testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp (obj): Set up object file name extension. Use throughout. Don't completely exclude non-ELF alpha targets. Run long_filenames test for tic30. Exclude thin archive tests for aix, ecoff and vms. * estsuite/binutils-all/objdump.exp (obj): Set up object file name extension. Use throughout. Don't exclude non-ELF alpha targets from "bintest.a".

* Test binutils_assemble return valueAlan Modra2017-12-191-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is a followup to "binutils nm testsuite tidy". Since the perror in binutils_assemble has been removed, we need to take more care in failure paths. The patch also fixed a number of .exp files that have multiple tests, where an assembly failure returns from the .exp file. In most cases it is nicer to attempt all tests. * testsuite/binutils-all/ar.exp (unique_symbol): Don't run AR if assembly fails. * testsuite/binutils-all/arc/objdump.exp (check_assembly): If objfile is empty, fail test. * testsuite/binutils-all/arm/objdump.exp: Don't return if assembly fails for a test, continue on to other tests. * testsuite/binutils-all/bfin/objdump.exp: Likewise. * testsuite/binutils-all/hppa/objdump.exp: Likewise. * testsuite/binutils-all/m68k/objdump.exp: Likewise. * testsuite/binutils-all/vax/objdump.exp: Likewise. * testsuite/binutils-all/size.exp: Likewise. * testsuite/binutils-all/nm.exp: Likewise.
